Fluoride removal from aqueous solutions was studied using nanofiltration and sorption techniques which have always been best key ways to deal with water contaminated by fluoride. In this presented work, we were firstly interested on fluoridated rejected water overcoming the drawback of RO membrane process of groundwater treatment plant in Baltic region (Kretinga, Lithuania). Opoka sorbent has shown effective results of fluoride sorption with efficiency higher than 77%. In order to understand the sorption phenomenon and to validate the results obtained, we have applied exptl. data on Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms which allow us to determine isotherms parameters (KF; 1/n and KL; qmax) and to confirm the experiment Because of the unacceptable tariff of drinking water treated by RO, defluoridation with nanofiltration method is proposed in this study as a solution which can replace reverse osmosis technique. For that, tests of nanofiltration for fluoride removal were carried out at laboratory scale by using nanofiltration flat sheet membranes (NF270 and NF90).

Monolithic support materials with the mech. resistance and thermal conductivity of SiC as well as tunable surface chem. and textural properties were developed for their use in catalytic membrane reactors. After heat treatment, the extruded SiC monoliths have a monomodal distribution of macropores of a few μm in diameter depending on the particle size of the starting material. A macroporous, defect-free, smoother skin was applied onto the external wall using a solution of sub-micrometer SiC particles. These monoliths with skin could be coated successfully with molecularly selective membranes, and thus have application in membrane reactor processes. Finally, metal oxide nanoparticles were infiltrated into the macropores to modify the surface texture and chem., allowing the immobilization of liquid phase catalysts. The resulting multimodal distribution of pore sizes could be tuned by the choice of SiC and oxide particle sizes, number of wash-coats and calcination temparature. Mesopores created between nanoparticles had diameters of roughly 40% of those of the nanoparticles. Small macropores, between 10-1000 nm, were also created, with bigger size and volume at higher calcination temparatures due to the metal oxide particles contraction. The developed materials were validated as support for PDMS membranes and for continuous gas-phase hydroformylation of 1-butene using Rh-diphosphite catalysts.

This article explores the possibility of using polyolefin materials for composite insulator sheds. The transfer component (silicone oil or erucamide) is added into a polyolefin material to improve its hydrophobic properties. Results show that the silicone oil-modified polyolefin material (polyolefin-S) exhibited an obvious hydrophobicity transfer property. When the equivalent salt deposit d. and nonsol. deposit d. are 0.1 and 0.5 mg/cm2, resp., the static contact angle increases from 75° to 87° as the silicone oil transfer time increases from 24 to 96 h. Meanwhile, polyolefin-S exhibits high mech. strength, hardness, volume resistivity, and surface resistivity values of 21.4 MPa, 62.6 HD, 1.7 × 1015 Ω m and 1.2 × 1016 Ω, resp. Moreover, polyolefin-S shows excellent tracking and erosion resistance of 4.5 kV level in the inclined plane test. The results verify that the polyolefin material is a promising candidate material for the hard shed of composite insulators.

Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are widely used chem. stabilizers for preventing polymer degradation In this study, the effects of type of HALS and its content in high-d. polyethylene (HDPE) over the stabilization process are investigated employing d. functional theory (DFT) and exptl. approach. The electrophilicity index of four types of com. HALS are compared by DFT to select the most effective one. Besides, the HDPE sample containing a phenolic antioxidant and different contents of the selected HALS are exptl. exposed to UV irradiation The effect of HALS content on the changes in chain microstructure and mol. weight of HDPE are evaluated using gel permeation chromatog. and frequency sweep rheometry. In the absence of HALS, HDPE suffers degradation and the phenolic antioxidant causes chain scission. However, by adding HALS, the chain branching and crosslinking mechanisms are predominant. The results of FTIR, DSC, and tensile analyses follow similar trends, revealing that the best stabilization performance corresponds to adding 600 ppm HALS to HDPE.

Terahertz dielec. spectroscopy is shown to be an effective tool for bench-marking UV aging of polypropylene. In this, thin-film polypropylene samples exposed to standard artificial UV radiation in accelerated aging from 1 day to 30 days are closely monitored by a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system and analyzed using an effective data processing method. It is found that the terahertz absorption of the polypropylene samples is generally weak and the terahertz dielec. constant varies slightly though discernibly during the aging process, with the refractive index decreasing slightly with increasing length of UV exposure. Nonetheless, the rate of variation of the polypropylene refractive index with increasing terahertz frequency exhibits a drastic inflection around the 15-days aging point and the rate changes suddenly from pos. value to neg. value. Based on this prominent and consistent THz dielec. spectroscopic feature of the aging process, an efficient judging criterion is established to distinguish the early-term, mid-term, and late-term phases as well as the degree of polypropylene UV aging, corresponding to the fundamental transformation of the polymer material from a nonpolar to a polar substance at a critical level of oxidation induced by UV radiation.

The introduction of flame retardants often decreases the UV resistance ability of the photo stabilizer. In this work, the antagonistic effect between APP and a light stabilizer HLAS770 was investigated, and the microencapsulated APP (Si-APP) was prepared by coating ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with polysiloxane. Si-APP was introduced into polypropylene (PP) in association with a light stabilizer bis (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl) sebacate (HALS770) to synchronously improve both the photo-aging resistance and flame retardancy. The characterization of surface topog., carbonyl index, and mech. properties demonstrated that the antagonistic effect between APP and HALS770 was eliminated by the presence of polysiloxane. The limiting oxygen index and cone calorimeter test results revealed that the heat and smoke release of aged PP composites containing Si-APP and HALS770 was decreased by 28% and 35% resp., compared with that of the aged control PP sample, which is crucial to the practical application of PP. It was proved that polysiloxane and HALS770 synergistically improved the photo-aging resistance and flame retardancy of PP. It is suggested that this work provides a new strategy for fabricating long-life flame retardant polypropylene composites.

Encapsulants based on ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) or polyolefin elastomers (POE) are essential for glass or photovoltaic module laminates. To improve their multi-functional property profile and their durability, the encapsulants are frequently peroxide crosslinked. The crosslinking kinetics are affected by the macromol. structure and the formulation with stabilizers such as phenolic antioxidants, hindered amine light stabilizers or aromatic UV absorbers. The main objective of this study was to implement temperature-rise and isothermal dynamic mech. anal. (DMA) approaches in torsional mode and to assess and compare the crosslinking kinetics of novel UV-transparent encapsulants based on EVA and POE. The gelation time was evaluated from the crossover of the storage and loss shear modulus. While the investigated EVA and POE encapsulants revealed quite similar activation energy values of 155 kJ/mol, the storage modulus and complex viscosity in the rubbery state were significantly higher for EVA. Moreover, the gelation of the polar EVA grade was about four times faster than for the less polar POE encapsulant. Accordingly, the curing reaction of POE was retarded up to a factor of 1.6 to achieve a progress of crosslinking of 95%. Hence, distinct differences in the crosslinking kinetics of the UV-transparent EVA and POE grades were ascertained, which is highly relevant for the lamination of modules.
