We therefore tested the dimer of N-acetylcysteine, DiNAC, which is a disulfide with immunomodulating properties and enhances oxazolone-induced contact sensitivity (CS) reactions in mice, for effects on atherosclerosis. When given to male heritable hyperlipidemic rabbit (WHHL) rabbits from 10 to 22 weeks of age, this compound reduced by 50% thoracic aorta atherosclerosis (p < 0.05), without affecting plasma lipid levels. Here we also show that probucol and a close chemical analog, both known to prevent atherosclerosis in WHHL rabbits, enhance the CS reaction in mice, while two other related antioxidants did not affect the CS reaction. At least one of these is also without effect on atherosclerosis in WHHL rabbits. The results show that DiNAC might represent a new treatment modality for atherosclerosis-related disease, and suggest that some antioxidants may have antiatherosclerotic properties more related to "immunomodulatory" properties than to antioxidant properties in general. Ecotoxic effects of loratadine and its metabolic and light-induced derivatives

Loratadine and desloratadine are second-generation antihistaminic drugs. Because of human administration, they are continuously released via excreta into wastewater treatment plants and occur in surface waters as residues and transformation products (TPs). Loratadine and desloratadine residues have been found at very low concentrations (ng/L) in the aquatic environment but their toxic effects are still not well known. Both drugs are light-sensitive even under environmentally simulated conditions and some of the photoproducts have been isolated and characterized. The aim of the present study was to investigate the acute and chronic ecotoxicity of loratadine, desloratadine and their light-induced transformation products in organisms of the aquatic trophic chain. Bioassays were performed in the alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus and in two crustaceans, Thamnocephalus platyurus and Ceriodaphnia dubia. Loratadine exerted its acute and chronic toxicity especially on Ceriodaphnia dubia (LC50: 600 mug/L, EC50: 28.14 mug/L) while desloratadine showed similar acute toxicity among the organisms tested and it was the most chronically effective compound in Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. Generally, transformation products were less active in both acute and chronic assays.

This paper reports a new, practical, and environmentally friendly catalytic system for reduction of the ketones to the related alcohols with efficient reaction performance in water. Catalysts were generated in situ from rhodium, ruthenium and iridium transition metal compounds with commercially available piperidines [Piperidine (L1), 2-hydroxymethylpiperidine (L2), 3-hydroxymethylpiperidine (L3), 4-hydroxymethylpiperidine (L4), 4-hydroxypiperidine (L5)] as bifunctional ligands. Catalyst generated from RuCl2(PPh3)3 and 4-hydroxymethyl piperidine have shown the best activity in aqueous media which gave a 100% product yield. RuCl2(PPh3)3, has showed a better efficiency than [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2, IrCl(PPh3)3, or RhCl(PPh3)3 in HCOOH?HCOONa buffer solution. This study was also investigated the relationship between the structure of hydroxymethyl piperidine ligands and the catalytic activity.
