A flask was charged with triphosgene (1.73 g, 5.82 mmol, 0.70 equiv), DCM (60 mL), and HFIP (2.80 g, 16.7 mmol, 2.00 equiv) under nitrogen. DIPEA (4.28 g, 33.2 mmol, 4.00 equiv) was added at 0 C, and then the reaction mixture was allowed to stir for 2 h at rt. tert-Butyl 1,8-diazaspiro[4.5]decane-1-carboxylate (2.00 g, 8.32 mmol, 1.00 equiv) was added and the mixture was stirred overnight. The mixture was then quenched with water (50 mL), extracted with DCM (2 x 80 mL) and the organic layers were combined, washed with brine (2 x 50 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The residue was chromatographed on a silica gel column with EtOAc/petroleum ether (1/5) to provide 2.56 g (71% yield) of 1 -(tert-butyl) 8-(1,1,1,3,3,3 -hexafluoropropan-2-yl) 1,8- diazaspiro[4.5]decane-1,8-dicarboxylate as a yellow solid.
