General procedure: A mixture of the corresponding b-carboline-3-acid methyl ester(1 mmol), NaOH (4 mmol), C2H5OH (5 ml) and H2O (10 ml) was refluxed for 3 h, and the ethanol was removed on the rotary evaporator.The mixture was neutralized (pH = 5) with 5 N HCl and cooled.
