Separation of calcium and magnesium using dual precipitation/chelation scheme from saline solutions

A process scheme has been developed for the selective separation of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) from the Red Sea water and reverse osmosis (RO) brine using combined dual precipitation/chelation units. Two precipitation stages have been adopted for sequential Ca and Mg removal using sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide, respectively. Calcium removal using sodium carbonate approached 96.6 and 93.2% for Red Sea (pH 9) and RO brine (pH 9.2), respectively. Maximum Mg removal efficiencies achieved using sodium hydroxide at pH 12 for both Red Sea and RO brine were 99.6 and 74%, respectively. The decalcified filtrate of the second precipitation stage was further processed for Mg removal using ethylene glycol bis(2-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N?,N?-tetra acetic acid (EGTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and N-(2-Hydroxyethyl) ethylene diamine-N,N,N?-triacetic acid (HEDTA) as selected chelating agents. Almost complete removal of Mg was achieved using the three tested chelating agents with maximum Mg adsorption capacity of 490?mg/g. The final rich monovalent effluents could be directed to thermal or membrane desalination plants or selective monovalent ion separation/salt recovery units. The purified streams after Ca and Mg removal could be utilized immediately for lithium, potassium, and sodium chloride separation.

Influence of curing agent on dielectric properties of crosslinked poly(vinylalcohol-co-vinylcyanoethoxy)

Organic electronic devices require dielectric layers made from materials with high dielectric constant (epsilon?) and good dielectric strength, which allow reducing the threshold voltage and decreasing the power consumption of electronic circuitry. Poly(vinylalcohol-co-vinylcyanoethoxy) (CEPVA) has high epsilon? (? 15) and low conductivity (sigma?), which are exactly the characteristics needed for dielectrics. Its Tg close to room temperature limits, however, its applicability in electronics and improvements of its stability and mechanical properties are necessary. Here, we report on curing of this polymer, exploiting the residual hydroxyl groups present in the polymers after reaction of the parent poly(vinylalcohol) with acrylonitrile. Different curing agents were tested and showed a strong influence on the relaxation phenomena of the crosslinked polymer. The reduced mobility of backbone and side groups of the polymer decreased epsilon? but improved the mechanical stability at high temperature and decreased sigma?, especially at low frequencies, where ionic conductivity and interface polarization usually occur. At the same time, the hydrophilicity of the polymer was reduced.

A reusable P, N-doped carbon quantum dot fluorescent sensor for cobalt ion

In this work, phosphorus, nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (P,N-CQDs) as highly selective fluorescent probe for cobalt ion (Co2+) detection were designed and synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal protocol by employing pyridoxal 5-phosphate and ethanediamine. This probe enables selective detection of Co2+ with a linear range of 0?60 muM and a limit of detection of 0.053 muM through variation in fluorescence with respect to target concentration and electron-transfer from P,N-CQDs to Co2+. Furthermore, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 (Fe3O4@SiO2-EDTA) was tailor-designed and prepared to successfully realize the recovery of P,N-CQDs/Co2+ fluorescence for the first time. The reusable P,N-CQDs as fluorescent sensors for Co2+ also show good linearity and sensitivity. Ultimately, this fluorescent probe was applied in the analysis of real river water samples.

Dry micro-polymeric inoculant of Azospirillum brasilense is useful for producing mesquite transplants for reforestation of degraded arid zones

Massive clear-cutting of wild stands of mesquite trees in the Mexican part of the Sonoran Desert result from high demand for this wood by the charcoal industry. Consequently, there is a need to develop techniques for reforestation of this tree in the desert and maintain its natural diversity at the same time. An outdoor nursery procedure to produce mesquite transplants from diversely originated seeds for reforestation of arid zones was developed. This procedure involved: 1) inoculation of the seedlings in the nursery with the plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) Azospirillum brasilense immobilized in dry microbeads of alginate, and 2) developing a reliable way to monitor plant development and aerial volume in the nursery for the entire growth period of seven months before transplantation. Dry microbeads containing the PGPB and maintained at room temperature were tested for survival of bacteria for up to seven months. These dry microbeads maintained sufficient population levels of A. brasilense to inoculate the plant for the entire period. Inoculation with the PGPB enhanced all growth parameters of the plants, including biomass, aerial volume, root system, and chlorophyll pigments, but not the auxiliary photosynthetic pigments. The PGPB was specifically identified colonizing the roots of the transplants by fluorescent in situ hybridization for the entire growth period. Measuring a few simple parameters allowed development of a workable model for plant growth. This model was confirmed by data obtained from sacrificed plants whose parameters were measured directly. This study shows that outdoor nursery cultivation of inoculated mesquite transplants is feasible.
