II was prepared by hydrocyanation of di-Me itaconate  [617-52-7], reduction-cyclization of the di-Me (cyanomethyl)succinate  [24537-51-7] to 4-(carbomethoxy)-2-piperidone  [25504-47-6], and hydrolysis.
