The mixture was quenched by addition of saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution and it was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried over Na2S04, filtered and concentrated to obtain 1 -benzyl -4-propylpiperidine-4- carbonitrile (6.0 g, 24.8 mmol). This compound was used without further purification. MS m/z 243 (M+H)+.
